From hospital to home - Improving care outcomes for older people - July 2004
Summary
Australia, like many other countries, is experiencing an unprecedented increase in the number of older people as a proportion of the total population. This is expected to continue over several decades. At 30 June 2001 there were an estimated 2.4 million Australians aged 65 and over, or 12.5 per cent of the total population. By 2021, it is expected that 4.2 million people will be aged over 65, or 18 per cent of the population.
